The Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade was opened on October 20, 1965. The activity of the Museum began in 1958, when the act of the Council for Culture of the People's Committee, Mr.of Belgrade, a decision was made to establish the Modern Gallery, an institution whose task was to monitor the development of Yugoslav contemporary art. The Executive Council of the Socialist Republic of Serbia decides to build a building for the needs of the Modern Gallery that would satisfy modern museological principles and determines the location in New Belgrade at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, opposite the Belgrade Fortress. In 1960, a competition was announced for the conceptual design of a new building. The project of architects Ivan Antić and Ivanka Raspopović was accepted, for which they will later be awarded the Belgrade Belgrade Award for Architecture on the opening day of the Museum. After the construction of the new building, the Council of the Modern Gallery adopts a new name of the institution - the Museum of Contemporary Art. Miodrag B. Protić was appointed the first manager of the new Museum.

Adapting to modern museological principles of cultural heritage protection and exhibition policies, today the Museum of Contemporary Art is a dynamic institution that, with the scope and diversity of its programs, research and pedagogical work, intensive international cooperation and openness to various forms of cultural activities and cooperation, is an important factor of artistic and cultural life of Belgrade and Serbia, which, as such, plays a significant role in the processes of cultural transformation of Serbian society in the period of transition and the process of Euro-Atlantic integration.

The founder and first director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (1965-1980) was Miodrag B. Protić, a painter and author of important exhibitions, books and texts in the field of the history of Yugoslav and Serbian modern art. The directors of the Museum were: Marija Pušić (1980-1984), Kosta Bogdanović (acting director, 1984-1986), Zoran Gavrić (1986-1993), Radisav Trkulja (1993-2001) and Branislava Andjelković-Dimitrijević (2001-2013), Vladislav Šćepanović (acting director 2013-).
